Jem & Lucy Bailey's Review:

Your body belongs to you and you get to set your own rules, so that you may have boundaries for different people and sometimes they might change. Like when you hi-five your friends and kiss your kitten, but not the other way round!

Rachel Brian, co-creator of the viral “tea consent” video has created an easy-to-read, funny, and informative graphic novel for talking about consent and boundaries with children. Everyone and every family has different ideas of where and what boundaries are, like who gets to decide what clothes you wear and when you have to take that yuck medicine, and Respect is always respectful of that. Covering families, friendships, pets and ending by making sure you also respect others, this is a much needed book.

Respect touches lightly on some harder topics, like grooming or the concept of clothing not indicating consent to activities, so there is room for bigger discussion outside of the basic concepts shown within this book. I would think that much of this would go over the heads of younger readers - but those who get it are probably the ones who most need to read this. It is always very clear that when an adult is inappropriate with a kid it is ALWAYS the adult's fault. There's also a section at the end on how to get support - from those around you or from helplines.

Older children (maybe 8+) could read this on their own as the style of the book is light and funny with helpful comics and illustrations. However, it would also be good as a starting point for a family conversation on consent, bodily autonomy and boundaries and would be very useful in schools.
