Early Experiences & Issues | Hardback Picture Books | LGBTQI+
A funny book about growing up in a family with two mums inspired by Gus Skattebol-James' story in the award-winning documentary, Gayby Baby.
Ruth's Review:
I love wrestling. When I grow up, I want to be just like my wrestling heroes: big and tough, with really huge muscles. The only problem is, my mums don't like fighting...
This thoughtful story about an 8-year-old boy growing up in a family with two mums deals with issues of macho images, identity and family in a light-hearted and positive way.
Banned from his beloved wrestling, Gus is determined to convince his mums it isn’t all violent and, with help from his little sister, comes up with a plan involving dressing up to win them over.
Mars and Newell spent eight years making the documentary film Gayby Baby, about the experiences of children with same-sex parents. Gus Skattebol-James, their co-author, is one of those kids and the star of this story. Now 17, Gus isn't obsessed with wrestling any more, but he is a black belt in Aikido (a Japanese martial art) and is mad about skateboarding. Age 4+
