Out of Nothing

Author(s): Daniel Locke; David Blandy

General Graphic Books | Science

Spanning millennia, Daniel Locke's ambitious graphic novel explores humanity's inherent 'dreaming mind and its impact on our world. Surreal sequences take us from Gutenberg's printing press to Tim Berners-Lee's World Wide Web via Picasso, Einstein, Grandmaster Flash and more. Locke shows hour our basic instinct to observe, record and connect has formed the basis for all human invention and progress.

Lucy's Review:

From the formation of our sun to the heat death of the universe, this beautiful graphic novel explores human evolution with a particular focus on the history of ideas and the development of imagination. Following the journey of a young blue female time-traveller, we meet (amongst many others) paleolithic storytellers, Johannes Gutenberg, Einstein and DJ Cool Herc, as we discover connections between science, art and philosophy.

NoBrow (the publishers behind children's imprint Flying Eye) have created a fascinating book all about creativity and our ability to take disparate things and mix them together into something new. Packed full of facts and philosophical ideas, this would have truly blown my mind as a teenager. I don't totally agree with all their interpretations but it definitely opens your mind and gets you asking questions about the world.

Probably a little baffling for younger readers as a reasonable grasp of scientific concepts is expected, I'd recommend it for anyone really interested in science and in having a good old think. For reading on your own, I'd suggest 12+ but this could be a good one for discussions with younger children who've really shown an interest.
