Little Green Raincape is on her way to Rapunzel's party, deep in the wild woods. The way is long and dark, but Green is a smart girl. Smart enough to turn down apples offered by kindly old ladies, smart enough to turn down travel advice from helpful wolves, and above all, smart enough to solve a wealth of classic fairy tale problems - not least mend a lovelorn beast's broken heart.
Once Upon a Wild Wood is a richly imagined story packed full of familiar fairy tale characters as you've never seen them before. Including Red Riding Hood, Thumbelina, Rapunzel, Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, the three bears, the seven dwarfs and many more!
A visual feast on every page, illustrated with warmth and humour and full of witty details to discover - this is Chris Riddell at his picture book best!
The way through the wood is dark and deep,
with many a lesson to gauge,
and the path you take is the story you make,
each step a turn of the page...
Little Green Rain cape has an invitation to a party at Rapunzel's Tower. On her journey through the woods she comes across a helpful wolf, a kindly, apple wielding old lady, and a troll. Each offers her help but Little Green Cape has everything covered. As she continues her travels, she meets a sassy magic harp, a weeping beast looking for his Beauty, three pigs enamoured with the construction of a gingerbread house, and many other colourful creatures.
With a book in hand, Little Green Rain Cape weaves through the tale deftly, using her smarts and empathy to help her new friends. She's a take-no-nonsense character, who problem solves her way through all obstacles.
Once Upon a Wild Wood is a beautiful mix of classic fairytales with a very modern voice from the UK's last Children's Laureate, Chris Riddell. Riddell marries the joy of reading and storytelling with charming illustrations, making a book that is just as fun to read and look at as it is to listen to. The hardback cover is beautifully designed with a cut out revealing the young protagonist, Little Green Rain Cape, among the forest and creatures, inviting the reader in to follow her on her journey.
Just in time for spring comes this wonderfully twisted fairy tale from Chris Riddell, told with his ever present wit, verve and deliciously clever illustrations.
Little Green Cape, is a lot more sensible and much better prepared for misadventure than your average fairy tale protagonist. She's wonderfully bemused to find a magical harp moaning about the weather, three little pigs sampling a witch's gingerbread cottage while commenting on the wolf-proofing (or lack there of) in its architecture . . . And there is much more wit and verve to come as we meet a large cast of fairytale characters.
Chris Riddell does the twisted fairy thing tale so well! A great advanced picture book! Perfect for ages 4-7.
