Our Little Inventor

Author(s): Sher Rill Ng

Hardback Picture Books

'It's done!' said Nell. 'My invention is finished! I must show it to the people in the Big City as soon as I can.' Far from Nell's home in the countryside, the Big City is growing more polluted every day - and Nell has a brilliant mind and an ingenious invention. She sets off on the long journey, only to find that the problem is far worse than she'd imagined. But Nell is determined to succeed. A beautifully illustrated picture book about a small girl with a big dream to make the world a better.

Sasha's Review:
This book is just glorious. In this steampunk parable, an enormous city is choking on smog and ash but one little girl thinks she has the answer. Her machine can help clear the air, with the help of the city council. But all they see is a child and dismiss her without listening to her ideas. Our little inventor won't be stopped so easily, though....
In reality, the world is barrelling towards a climate crisis and children have already seized the initiative and stood up to adults in power - now is the time to explore new solutions, and not discount technological aid as well as nature. This book is eerily prescient!

Sher Rill Ng is a Melbourne-based illustrator. At age 9 she was inspired by the drawings of a fellow classmate and promptly acquired a 'How to draw' book, soon becoming 'that-kid-in-class-who-draws'.
