When the worldquake struck, it threw Effie and Maximillian's world back to 1992 (the internet is back to dial-up and only the lucky few have pagers) and Effie's mother disappeared. Now magic is creeping back into the world and Effie's grandfather knows more than he's letting on. Forbidden from learning anything about magic by her father, Effie is desperate to know more and, when her grandfather is attacked one night, she's thrown head first into a quest that will change her world forever.

Scarlett Thomas' first foray into children's literature is one of the most exciting books I've read in years. With a possibly magical school - the Tusitala School for the Gifted, Troubled and Strange; a portal to the otherworld in a magical bun shop; books you can literally fall into; an erudite but ravenous dragon; quotes from Katherine Mansfield, James Joyce and Bulgakov; and a group of children discovering both their own magical powers and the power of friendship, it had me wondering exactly what it would be like reading Harry Potter for the first time back in 1997. It has glimpses of a world just as richly imagined as Rowling's and a truly excellent ending which leaves you both satisfied and excited for the adventures to come.

There's a website where you can find out your own magical powers and teachers can download a free resource pack.

Perfect for those who have not managed to move on from Harry Potter and for those who aren't quite old enough to read the last books, this is highly (so super highly!) recommended for ages 8+ ...and it has a glow-in-the-dark cover!

After the Worldquake, Effie knows about magic - time in her grandfather's library has made sure of that. But there's still much she has to learn. About the Otherworld. And about the Diberi, a secret organisation with plans to destroy the entire universe.

Effie and her school-friends are the only ones who can stop them . . . and time is running out.

The most exciting debut in children's fiction since HARRY POTTER. Immersive, engaging, original; delightful in its details (a bun shop that serves as a portal to Otherworld; a library of Last Editions; a Princess School in which girls are trained to be appealing to dragons); playful, warm and yet thrilling, too -- JOANNE HARRIS

A magical adventure that fizzes and crackles with enchantment. I was absolutely bedazzled -- HILARY McKAY

An enthralling tale, set in a sprawling world that swallowed me whole -- Kiran Millwood Hargrave, author of THE GIRL OF INK & STARS

Gorgeous and funny - and a lovely celebration of the magic of books! -- Helen Falconer, author of THE CHANGELING

PRAISE FOR OTHER BOOKS BY SCARLETT THOMAS: Ingenious and original... A cracking good yarn fizzing with intelligence -- PHILIP PULLMAN Entrancing ... one of the sharpest fantasies I've encountered -- NEIL GAIMAN

Author description

Scarlett Thomas has always loved stories, magic and mysterious places. She tried (and failed) to write her first novel when she was six. Since then she has successfully written lots of novels, but this is her first one for children. She lives near the sea in an old house full of books, and is a professor in the English department of the University of Kent.

Dragon's Green is the first volume in the Worldquake Sequence.
