Evernight

Author(s): Ross MacKenzie

Middle Fiction

Thousands of years ago, the Evernight came to the Silver Kingdom and turned everything to darkness and chaos. It was only defeated thanks to the skill and bravery of the Witches. But now the Evernight is about to return, released by the evil Mrs Hester, and the only spell that might stop it is lost, deep below the great city of King's Haven.

Then orphan Larabelle Fox stumbles across a mysterious wooden box while treasure-hunting in the city's sewers. Little does she realise she is about to be catapulted into an adventure, facing wild magic and mortal danger - and a man who casts no shadow . . .

Ruth's Review:

The Evernight, which will turn everything in the Silver Kingdom to darkness and chaos, is about to return and the only spell that might stop it is lost in the sewers below the city of King's Haven.

When feisty orphan Larabelle Fox stumbles across a mysterious wooden box while treasure-hunting in the sewers, she has no idea that she is about to be catapulted into an adventure, facing wild magic and danger from the King's Witch, the terrifying Mrs Hester, and Shadow Jack, a man who casts no shadow.

MacKenzie has created a brilliantly dark fantasy world filled with a cast of wonderful characters, both good and evil. Lara is brave and kind and looks out for her best friend Joe, another tosher (sewer treasure hunter). There is the seemingly benign pawnbroker Old Hans, for whom money means everything, and Double Eight, a White Witch who is desperate to escape from Mrs Hester's slavery.

Fans of Jessica Townsend's Nevermoor series can feast on this perfect combination of dark magic and twisty intrigue while waiting for her third book Hollowpox to be published, hopefully later this year. There are some gruesome scenes involving Mrs Hester and Shadow Jack which won't suit sensitive readers. But if you love bloodthirsty and creepy, combined with a brilliant plot, then this first book in a new series will have you hooked from the first line -  There was a man made of midnight, and his name was Shadow Jack.

Highly recommended for age 10+
