The Goat

Author(s): Anne Fleming

Middle Fiction

A child named Kid, a dog named Cat, and a goat who lives on the roof ... Part mystery and part animal-rescue story, about an unnamed goat that inadvertently changes the lives of the eccentric denizens of a Manhattan apartment building.

Kid and her parents are spending time in a relative's New York apartment while her mom appears in an off-Broadway show. During a visit to a museum, she meets Will and his grandmother and the two become friends. Both children have anxiety issues. Kid is desperately shy, while Will's parents were killed in the Twin Towers collapse and ever since his grandmother hasn't let him out of her sight.

The rumour that a goat is living on the top of the apartment building intrigues Kid and Will and they set out to investigate. Along the journey they meet a bunch of eccentric apartment dwellers. There is a blind skateboarding fantasy writer, an old man trying to adapt to life after a stroke and a hamster-owning opera lover, traumatised by his father's death.

Funny and a bit screwball, The Goat is a charming story of misfits (both children and adults) who triumph. Ideal for age 9+ and an especially good read-aloud for its brilliant writing and dialogue.
