The Storm Keeper's Island (#1 Storm Keeper)

Author(s): Catherine Doyle

Middle Fiction

Catherine Doyle's stunning middle-grade debut, an evocative tale of ancient magic, bravery, and family bonds.

"Fans of Harry Potter or Percy Jackson can add Fionn Boyle as a generous and brave hero from the Emerald Isle." - School Library Connection

When Fionn Boyle sets foot on Arranmore Island, it begins to stir beneath his feet.

Once in a generation, the island chooses a new Storm Keeper - someone to wield its power and keep its magic safe from enemies. The time has come for Fionn's grandfather, a secretive and eccentric old man, to step down. Soon, a new Keeper will rise.

Fionn's ancestral home has been waiting for him. But, deep underground, someone else has been waiting, too. As the battle rages over who will become the island's next champion, a more sinister magic is waking up, intent on rekindling an ancient war.

Catherine Doyle's gorgeously written and evocative tale is perfect for fans of Orphan Island, Beyond the Bright Sea, and A Snicker of Magic.

Lucy's Review:

Somewhere deep inside the earth, the darkness was rising again, a darkness more terrible than anything the world had ever seen.
It was too late to stop it now.

11-year-old Fionn and his 13-year-old sister Tara have been sent to spend the summer with their grandad on the island of Arranmore off the Irish coast. Surrounded by the sea that took his father before he was born and by the mysterious yet beautiful candles his grandfather makes, Fionn sets off on a quest to find the wish-granting Sea Cave before his sister and her annoying boyfriend Bartley Beasley. But deep under the island, someone has been waiting for Fionn - a storm is coming to Arranmore.

A beautiful and magical adventure of great charm and humour (and a little darkness and danger), The Storm Keeper's Island is a delight. It's almost an updated version of one of my favourite books, Over Sea, Under Stone by Susan Cooper, with the Dagda and the Morrigan of Irish mythology replacing Arthurian legend. The relationships between Fionn and his grandad and between the siblings are warm and filled with familiar bickering. Fionn's strained relationship with his mother who he sees as too sad and too tired to really be a mum and grandad's occasionally terrifying memory lapses are both thoughtfully drawn.

The Storm Keeper's Island is an adventure at heart but with a depth of emotion and history that adds a real potency to the story. Highly recommended for 9+
