Whetū Toa and the Magician (#1)

Author(s): Steph Matuku

NZ Junior Fiction

When Whetu's mother takes a job organising a magician's house and farm, Whetu becomes the animal keeper, looking after a golden ram, three lazy pigs, talking horses, a cowardly bull and the magician's stage assistant - an arrogant white rabbit called Errant.

Errant's been playing around with magic and created a carnivorous lamb, which he can't change back. Rather than face the magician, Errant disappears and Whetu becomes the magician's new assistant, just in time for the Royal Performance. It all seems to be going well until Errant reappears to seek his revenge, and Whetu must save the day - and the king.

Lucy's Review:

Whetū has just moved to the country as her mum's got a job organising a magician's house and farm. Whetū becomes the animal keeper, looking after a chicken that is sometimes a lot more than one chicken, a shining golden ram, three lazy pigs, a bull who keeps crying and the magician's stage assistant - a super arrogant white rabbit called Errant. Oh, and a really terrifying carnivorous lamb. Just when Whetū and her mum seem to have everything under control, and are no longer in danger of ending up living in their car, Errant disappears and someone will have to be the new magician's assistant...

A great junior fiction book from Steph Matuku. Whetū is a strong character who brooks no nonsense from anyone; she's funny and very relatable. We don't see anywhere near enough Māori characters in books for this age (or any age really) and Whetū is an excellent addition for kids who want to see themselves reflected in the books they read. The carnivorous lamb is actually quite disturbing though (although also funny) and I'd advise against reading these particular chapters at bedtime if you want to get any sleep!
