The Fire Stallion (HB)

Author(s): Stacy Gregg

NZ Middle Fiction

An enchanting and empowering standalone story from the author of The Princess and the Foal.

Twelve-year-old Hilly has landed her dream job, riding on the set of Brunhilda, an epic film based on the fearless warrior of Icelandic legend. Norse fire ritual tells that on mid-summer's day, animals and humans can shape-shift and one night Hilly finds herself connected to the young warrior and her fire stallion. As the two girls' lives intertwine, Hilly soon realises that they'll both have to risk everything for the love of their horses...

Inspired by real-life historical events, The Fire Stallion is an epic tale...

Ruth's Review:

Hilly, 13, joins her mum's film crew in Iceland where a movie is being made about the fearless teenage warrior Brunhilda and lands a dream job of stunt double for the star in the riding scenes.

In Norse legend on midsummer's day animals and humans can shapeshift through a fire ritual and one night Hilly finds herself connected to Brunhilda and her fire stallion Jotun. Hilly, who is grieving the loss of her own pony, finds that she and Brunhilda have much in common as their lives intertwine and she is determined that the true fate of this fiery young future Queen of the Valkyries should be revealed.

Stacy Gregg delivers another thrilling standalone novel filled with adventure, purebred Icelandic horses, Viking mythology, fierce sibling rivalry, strong-willed girls and the bond of "oneship with an animal". She uses the dual narrative to tell both girls' stories, a feature of many of her historical girl-and-pony novels inspired by real-life events, and this gives the reader a close connection to both characters. A gorgeous gift hardback edition, I highly recommend it for age 9+ and not just horse fans.
