In February 2019, a tiny spark in a Pigeon Valley paddock became the largest fire in New Zealand since 1955. Up to 150 volunteer firefighters fought the blaze. Around 3,500 people were evacuated, including the whole town of Wakefield. Dozer the cat was evacuated from Wakefield too, but went missing the same evening. He was spotted a week later and, after hiding for two more days, was finally caught and returned to his family.

PUBLICATION FEB 2020 Ruth's Review: In February last year around 3500 people were evacuated from Wakefield in the Nelson-Tasman district when a spark from farming equipment caused a huge fire that destroyed over 2000 hectares in Pigeon Valley. While one family was busy packing up to evacuate, their cat Dozer was oblivious to the carnage around him. He was busy stalking, pouncing, washing ... and sleeping. But when he woke up his family had gone and his world had become a frightening place. Cooper's stunning illustrations bring Tasman author Prokop's first picture book story to life as plucky Dozer has to rely on his wits three long days before his family returns. Based on a true story, Dozer's tale is one of bravery and survival and, luckily, has a happy ending.
