Ruth's Review:

Kiwi teen spy Joe believes he has been recruited by MI5 to find his mother in Nazi Germany but discovers that, instead, he is to infiltrate an elite group of Hitler Youth. Joe, who takes the place of Jürgen, must compete with 3 other boys and 4 girls for a prize that will take him right into Hitler's inner circle. But, there are pitfalls ahead. One of the girls has seen the real Jürgen and Joe is in a quandary over how to silence her. Also, a British traitor, whom Joe helped uncover, has escaped and is seeking revenge. Holed up at Berchtesgaden, where they are looked after by Eva Braun and guarded by the Gestapo, the eight teens lock horns as they undergo fitness trials and mental exercises to test their mettle.

Falkner's second book in this riveting series is so tense at times that I had to stop reading and calm down. He does not shy away from the brutality of war and there are some violent scenes that make it more suitable for teenage readers. But there are several humorous moments too within the twisty-turny, intricate plot - and a touch of romance. As with the first book, Blitzkrieg, it ends on a humdinger of a cliffhanger and now I'll have to wait another year to find out what happens next.

Description

In Spycraft, Falkner's masterful telling of the astonishing journey of Joseph St George (Katipo Joe) continues. A teenage boy recruited by MI5, is this time on a mission to infiltrate an elite group of Hitler Youth. Joe travels to Germany, to the very heart of the Nazi spider web, where Adolf Hitler is making plans that will change the course of the war, and the course of Joe's life. In a world where one wrong word could bring catastrophe, he must compete with the other young people for a prize beyond his wildest dreams. But the consequences of failure are torture and death. From the war-torn skies over Germany, to the heights of the Eagle's Nest, this is Joe's story. Set amidst actual events, Joe's story is once again a tale of incredible heroism, unlikely romance and unbearable tragedy.
