Jem's Review:

Lord Henry "Monty" Montague is a hedonistic rake. He's short, charming, and absolutely in love with his best friend and cohort, Percy. After many runs ins and ill-advised shenanigans, Monty's father gives him an ultimatum - he can go on his European tour (a year long trip to the Continent) if he adheres to the strict rules that have been set in place and once back home he is to take over running the estate. For Monty this trip is his last hurrah before his wings are clipped for good.

Needless to say, the trip does not go to plan and along with his practical sister, Felicity, Monty finds himself is a world of trouble. From a naked dash through the gardens at Versailles, being attacked by highwaymen, a hasty trip to Barcelona, pirates, and a lot of pining over Percy, Monty and company have quite an adventure.

The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue is a grand historical romp and carefully delves into the subjects of queer culture in the 18th century, homophobia, racism, and sexism present at the time, and that has strong themes that are still relevant to experiences today. Definitely recommended for older readers of YA as it doesn't shy away from Monty's more salacious acts, nor does it hide from the abuse he faced from his father.

There is also a sequel titled The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy which is set a year later and told from Felicity Montague's point of view as she fights for her right to study medicine and to make her own way in the world. And of course, there are pirates.
