Joan Aiken MBE was was a multi award winning English writer specialising in fiction for children. She won the Guardian's Children's Fiction Prize in 1968 for The Whispering Mountain and an Edgar Allen Poe award for Nightfall. In 1999 she was awarded an MBE for her services to Children's Literature. In her lifetime, she produced over 100 books.
